Lepidium meyenii, also known as Maca or Peruvian ginseng, is an edible herb plant native to the Andes mountains of Peru. According to legend, the Spaniards noticed that the reproductive rate of the domestic animals and the local population had an increased reproductive rate in the Andean highlands when compared to Spain. Their chronicles contain frequent references to this phenomenon.
