Mechanism of action:
Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH) refers to the enlargement of the prostate gland, a disorder that has reached almost epidemic proportions in our modern civilisation. When the prostate gland enlarges it pushes against the urethra, affecting the individual’s ability to urinate – and often his sexual functionality! As a result many men become totally impotent and some experience the added embarrassment of incontinence.
Although BPH is not a dangerous condition itself it can lead to other potentially serious conditions. An infected prostate will swell and block the flow of urine through the urethra, causing an accumulation of urine. The accumulation of urine may lead to serious urinary tract infections – a very toxic and dangerous situation. If BPH is left untreated the cells of the prostate may begin to mutate, leading to prostate cancer.
The cause of BPH seems to begin with normal hormonal changes brought on by the ageing process. After the age of 40 – 45 years, circulating testosterone levels begin to decrease, a change that tends to lead to increased levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT enters the nucleus of the cell and stimulates protein synthesis and growth causing an overproduction and swelling of prostate cells which ultimately results in BPH. This potent hormonal loop seems to be, amongst other factors, diet related.
To date the only medical treatment for BPH is prescription drugs and/or invasive surgery. But even the latest drugs seem to be relatively inefficient and slow to act and have some potentially serious side effects. Fortunately these are not our only choices; during the past few years scientists have discovered the causes of prostate disorders and the natural substances to alleviate symptoms and prevent the problems from occurring.
Saw Palmetto is effectively used for nutritional support of all bodily systems. This herb helps build new tissue and restore function and has also been used effectively to treat virtually all diseases of the reproductive system. Many articles were published documenting Saw Palmetto’s effects on general weight, general health and disposition, tranquillisation and reproductive health. This herb is used to tone and strengthen the prostate gland. It’s fatty acids and sterols have been clinically tested and can safely enhance the health and healing of the prostate. Studies show Saw Palmetto can alleviate prostate enlargement, support prostate healing and repair, aid in eliminating the build-up of harmful hormones in both males and females and relieve urinary discomfort. Saw Palmetto also acts directly on the enlarged prostate to reduce pain, inflammation and throbbing. It also increases the bladder’s ability to contract and expel it’s contents. The extract taken from this plant works in two ways; 1) by inhibiting the production of 5-alpha-reductose, and 2) by preventing dihydrotestosterone from binding to receptor sites in the prostate (two compounds known to be causative factors in benign prostatic hypertrophy).
Nettle Root was thought to be helpful as a treatment for asthma, as an expectorant, antispasmodic, diuretic, astringent and tonic. The diuretic properties of Nettle Root are well recognised. In addition, an extract of Nettle Root has become quite popular in recent years for the treatment of urinary retention brought on by benign prostatic hypertrophy, for secondary treatment of rheumatic complaints and for irrigation in cases of inflammation of the urinary tract.
Phytosterols are naturally occurring substances found in almost every plant but mostly removed from our daily diets through modern food manufacturing and processing. They form essential cell building blocks which assist with the transport of nutrients across the cell membrane as well as the normalisation of enzyme functioning. It has recently become known that a deficiency or inadequate supply of betasitosterols, through the diet, may have an influence on the healthy functioning of the prostate by inhibiting the synthesis of 5-alpha-reductose.
Lycopene is a fat-soluble carotenoid and a potent antioxidant. Recently researchers found lycopene to be a substance with the power to fight cancer and ward off cardiovascular and degenerative diseases. It was found that lycopene supplementation was associated with a decreased incidence of prostate cancer. A more exciting fact is that lycopene may even help to fight existing prostate cancer.
The most critical mineral required for a healthy prostate is zinc. It is arguably the most important mineral in an approach aimed at improving the condition of the prostate. Zinc has been shown in several studies to actually reduce prostate enlargement. This essential mineral helps to prevent the hormonal imbalance that causes prostate enlargement by reducing the amount of dihydrotestosterone produced. Additionally, zinc can reduce the bonding of both testosterone and DHT to cell receptor sites thereby allowing the body to excrete excess testosterone and/or DHT especially from the prostate.
Selenium is an essential trace mineral involved primarily in antioxidant enzymes. It acts as a catalyst to speed up and intensify the action of primary antioxidants. The prostate contains a selenium-containing protein. Clinical studies show that selenium is vital in decreasing the risk of several types of cancer.
